2012 Highlights

2012 was arguably the busiest year in UPT’s history to date and saw even greater successes than years prior.

The highlight of the firm’s 2012 was defeating one of the longest-serving and most powerful incumbent state senators and electing Katrina Shealy as the only female member of the South Carolina State Senate. Despite being outspent by hundreds of thousands of dollars, UPT elected Shealy as a petition candidate in a district that regularly casts a majority of straight-ticket Republican ballots.

UPT also elected Samuel Rivers, Jr. to the South Carolina State House of Representatives, making Samuel the only African-American Republican in either body of the South Carolina Legislature.

Fighting back against a constant barrage of attacks from the local daily newspaper and other media outlets, UPT secured a victory for South Carolina Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell with 72% of the vote against two challenger candidates.

UPT also ensured that Peter McCoy became the first representative in South Carolina's State House District 115 to win a second term since 2006.

UPT also secured several national television spots for McCoy as the Lowcountry Chairman for the Newt 2012 campaign. Additionally, UPT organized and executed the Election Eve Rally for Newt 2012 aboard the USS Yorktown, just hours before seeing Newt Gingrich win the South Carolina Presidential Preference Primary.

Other UPT successes in South Carolina in 2012 include electing David Merchant to the Sumter City Council - defeating a 26 year incumbent as a first time candidate with 64% of the vote, and securing a re-election victory for Jimmy Byrd to the Sumter County Council with 93% of the vote. UPT also elected Bill Hearn to the Dorchester County Council and Tom Ducker to the Charleston County School Board, while also managing phone programs for the successful campaign of State Senator-Elect Walter Hundley.

Through intense micro-targeting and creative messaging and designs, UPT secured a victory for Tate Acosta - making Acosta the first Republican elected official ever in Addis, a suburb of Baton Rouge.
